The political landscape on both sides of the Canada\/US border has undergone a dramatic transformation since the re-election of Donald Trump. This seismic shift has not only reshaped America\u2019s domestic priorities but has also had a profound impact on Canada. The realities of global trade, energy security, and economic resilience are now front and centre, demanding a recalibrated approach from both policymakers and industry leaders.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Canada, this moment is a wake-up call. The longstanding assumption that our economic stability could rest comfortably on access to the U.S. market is no longer sufficient. As a nation we must urgently refocus our efforts on domestic economic development, resource maximization, and a more diversified global trade strategy. This includes streamlining interprovincial trade, accelerating natural resource projects, and forging new trade relationships to reduce dependency on the U.S. market. While daunting, this should be viewed as a massive opportunity.<\/span><\/p><p><b>A New Approach to Government Relations<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these shifting dynamics, industry leaders should be rethinking their approach to government relations (GR). The old playbook of quiet diplomacy and incremental policy adjustments will not be enough. Instead, what is needed is a strategic and forward-looking campaign that aligns business interests with national priorities, ensuring that the narrative is not just about sectoral success but about Canada\u2019s prosperity as a whole.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment for advocacy campaigns, particularly at the federal level, have evolved dramatically, and success can only be achieved through the development of a very strategic approach that includes:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A Positive National Narrative:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Going forward businesses must frame their initiatives as essential to Canada\u2019s long-term success -for example investments in energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, and technology should be positioned as solutions that benefit Canadians from coast to coast.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Innovative Advocacy Strategies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Traditional lobbying efforts need to be complemented by data-driven storytelling, digital engagement, and grassroots coalition-building to mobilize public and political support.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bipartisan Engagement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With political volatility at home and abroad, industry must ensure that their GR approach resonates across party lines and is resilient to electoral shifts.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>At <\/span><b>Dominion Strategies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we are passionate about Canada\u2019s future and committed to helping businesses navigate this evolving landscape and achieve real results.
